S P Beattie Podiatry

Introduction

What is podiatry and how I can help you?

Do you suffer with ingrown toe nails, corns, calluses? Then look no further. I am here to help you.

Podiatry is the medical term that focuses on patients' healthcare of the feet and ankles. Our feet serve us well. They help us, and in an average lifetime they carry us to the equivalent of five times around the world. In return, rarely do we give our feet the special attention and care that they deserve.

Serving the West Midlands community as an experienced and specialised podiatry care practitioner, I can help you treat and heel your footcare worries. Trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs, I can help you prevent and correct deformity, keep you mobile and active, relieve pain and treat infections if they arise. I can give you and your family advice on how to look after your feet and what type of shoes to wear.

Footcare essentials and who is at risk?

Proper footcare is essential to healthy and painless feet which should be as an important ritual as brushing your teeth. Wash them everyday in warm soapy water, dry them well between the toes, trim your nails on a regular basis and wear shoes which provide your feet adequate room in width and depth.

Diabetics should be regularly checked for signs of loss of sensation, see prompt treatment for burns, cuts or breaks in skin or any unusual change in color or temperature.

It is of the utmost importance that people with the following conditions consult a podiatrist on a regular basis:

  • Diabetics
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Neuropathy
  • Physical Disability
  • Poor Eyesight

FAQ

What is the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist?

In the UK Podiatry is simply the new name for Chiropody. The name was changed to Podiatry in 1993 as it's the international recognised name for a footcare specialist.

What else changed?

It is not just the name that has changed, Podiatry is a constant evolving profession, the extensive training given to students over the 3 years of their full time course and the continuing education and graduation enable podiatrists to treat a vast array of foot and lower limb problems. Along with the most obvious treatments for corns and hard skin, specialities exist within the profession for almost any lower limb problems.

How can i be sure that i will receive the correct and safe treatment?

You can ask if they are HCPC registered, it is a criminal offence to falsely claim they are, anyone who calls themselves a podiatrist or chiropodist must register with the (HCPC). You can also check their registration via their website. This is the regulatory body for qualified healthcare professionals who's purpose is to protect the public and to ensure you are treated by qualified practitioners.

What will happen at my first appointment?

Your initial appointment will involve an assessment and if required a suitable treatment, a long term or short term treatment plan will be discussed and a suitable return frequency appointment can be decided and booked. Your assessment will involve your medical history, your current medication and the foot complaint you are suffering with. Your first appointment may be a stressful occasion but rest assured you will be put at ease and you may leave the clinic and remember important information related to your foot problem. Take a moment now to write down anything that you can think of before you attend, you may be surprised at what you can forget to mention.
